Default TH350 remote oil filter

I put a TH350 in my car last weekend and I have to say that I'm not very impressed at all with the internal oil filter. Aside from being extremely small, it looks like it would get clogged or restricted pretty easily. I've seen several remote filter kits that use a spin-on filter inline with the cooler.

Now the list of questions:
Does anyone have any experience with any particular brand of remote kit? It seems to me that I could run my -6AN line going to or from the trans cooler to a simple spin on filter adapter mounted in any convenient place. Most kits that I've seen come with a filter. Is a trans oil filter any different than a regular engine oil filter? Would the filter cause any potential problems (restrictions, line pressure issues)? Would it matter if the filter is before or after the cooler?
