Variable speed torque converter? Trans experts come in.
Is there a converter out there that functions as a variable speed stall? Possibly controlled by line pressure? For example light throttle = 1600rpm stall speed, WOT= 3200rpm? I know they use variable speed converters on much lower hp applications (15hp), but I heard GM used them on several older Buicks using different solenoids, but I couldnt find enough info to get more details. If there was a converter out there that could function like this im sure many of us would be interested, anyone know what im talking about?

You are talking about the Switch pitch GM converter from the 60"s it worked by changing the blabe angles of the stator from a high STR 2.4 to the STR ratio of a low 1.4 to help the engine idle in gear and for extra passing power.
They are big and heavy and do not work as well as current converter designs do.

i have one, switch pitch turbo 400, used it last year untill i swapped in the
4l80e-it had a 13" converter, 1200/3000 stall, but with the s/b(LS style) i would have been better off with the 12" converter, didnt have the torq like a B/B would to get that stall
it worked great though, cruisn thru a parking lot or slow speeds, the higher stall was great, once your moving i flipped the switch to low stall to tighten it up
someone made a lockup conversion, like the 350's, but i dont think he does it anymore
