Tranny HELP, video inside.
Tranny started acting really bad today, wasnt driving it hard or anything... Checked fluid, its full, color looks good... not sure what it should smell like lol. Anyways 1st and 2nd seem to work just fine but when it goes to 3rd its slipping i think??? So does this mean i need a whole new tranny or rebuilt? Whats better rebuilding it or buing a new one? Going down the road in D the max you can go is like 70 and thats about redline, its like it slips but if you get real high rpms it will go... idk...

Also this is a fully built tranny. Just double checked the fluid and it looks brand new.. Could it be the stall messed up? Im not sure how the stall reacts in each gear...

I dont know if its slipping in 4th or not because it wont go fast enough to go into fourth. It has no pull at all in 3rd gear. If the clutch packs where gone wouldnt it change the color of the tranny fluid? Is there anyway to tell if its the converter or the tranny without ripping them apart, i dont wanna spend money tearing down the tranny to find out that it wasnt even the problem ya know...

I don't think so necessarily. I remember I saw that happen in a Suburban with a 4L60E that I was in. It would just neutral out when it would try to go into 3rd. It didn't discolor the transmission fluid at all, nor did it smell burnt IIRC.
If it is indeed the 3-4 clutch pack, which I am about 75% sure it is, then it will also not go into 4th because all 4th does is apply the band with the 3-4 clutch pack already holding.
EDIT: in other words, the 3-4 clutch pack controls BOTH 3rd and 4th gears, so if that clutch can't grab, then both your 3rd and 4th won't work.

What would be my best route to go then? Get the current one fixed or start looking for a whole new settup? Any Idea what it would cost to fix the 3-4 clutch packs?

60mph at 5000 rpms cruising.., yeah your 3/4 clutches are slipping... if the trans fluid isnt burning up then its a good chance the piston for the clutch pack might not be getting enough apply pressure...how does 1-2 feel? i would hook up a scan tool and do tranny logging for every trans parameter possible and also hook up a line pressure gauge. forward gears should have 70psi+ while holding the brake in gear and climb to 150+ or so under wot(unless you have the trans set to max line pressure at all times. reverse should have 140psi while holding the brake in gear.
