Default best way to remove Crank Freeze Plug?

I need to replace the crank freeze plug and want to know what is the best way to remove the old one.
I know that I can tap it in and let it fall into the pan and fish it out.

can I maybe pull it out so that I dont have to lower the pan?

anyone done this while the engine is on the car?
thanks

So I found out it is a 1 inch expansion plug cup shape...I went to vatozone and got it but dont want to start just yet....I need some suggestions first.

Ill work on covering the shifter hole and installing the pedals in the meanwhile.

I just removed the bearing bc I noticed that after taking out the clutch and flywheel that there was some oil leaking from the center of the crank.
I have to remove the pilot bearing in order to get to the freeze plug.
I am doing a M6--->4l80e swap, the car used to be auto and went T56, now I want to go back to auto with a stall and built transmission.

Bro Inc, I think I will try your method. I hope that it comes out smoothly.
for what is worth, I already did most of the wiring inside the car, covered the hole where the shifter used to be, mocked the OEM A4 shifter since I will be using the same upper console.
the DS has the new slip yoke as well.
Tomorrow is the pedals, the freeze plug, tranny cooler mounting and hopefully the tranny mockup.

thanks for all those who looked, and those who responded.

well I cant start my tranny swap until I get this figured out. I went to install a new one but it was not the correct size so it just popped out..lol.
Im going to call the dealership tomorrow to see if they have one for the LS1 and measure them and compare them.
everything on the car is done except the tunning part of the swap.
the shifter and all the cables to it are mounted, pedals in place, master cylinder hole covered, all wiring inside completed.....
next thing in the morning is to do the plug in the crank and then the oil cooler and tranny and I should be done.
freaking little things that come up always causing me problems...grrrr
