Default Tailshaft play/noise

I've noticed when letting off and getting back on the throttle, there's a clunk somewhere in the drivetrain. First I thought it was in the suspension, but I checked everything and it all seems tight. Then I thought it might be a u-joint but I replaced the driveshaft and nothing changed. The rear end was just rebuilt and the noise was the same before and after. This leads me to the transmission. When I was taking out and putting in the driveshaft, I noticed that there was rotational play in the tailshaft whether the trans was in gear or in park. Probably at least 10 degrees each way. The noise it makes seems to be the clunk I'm hearing while driving. What would go bad to cause this?
