4L60E 1st and 2nd in limp mode?
I have a 96 4L60E and lost 3rd and 4th last night, RPMs flare when it shifts out of 2nd, feather the throttle and it goes back into 2nd.
In an effort to eliminate a possible electronic problem, I removed the Trans fuse to put it in limp mode. Now I have 1st gear when the shifter is in OD or 3rd, and 2nd gear when the shifter is in 1st or 2nd.
I'm thinking if the 3-4 clutches were bad you would have no forward movement in limp mode if the shifter is in OD or 3rd. Is that correct? If so what might be causing it to be in 1st when it should be in 3rd?
Any input would be appreciated

That's not what I was wanting to hear, LOL
It just seemed odd that it would go out like that with no warning or prior slippage. I was just putting around and had driven about a mile when it started.
I was hoping maybe it was a valve body problem or something simple someone had seen before, and I was wondering why it gives 1st gear in limp mode when it shouldn't. Oh well, looks like a busy weekend ahead.
Thanks for your reply

Well lets think about this. If you do not have 3rd gear with normal driving, how is that you would have a 3rd gear limp mode condition if the clutches are not working? The answer here is the forward clutch is still applied thus why it is starting out in first gear in your situation. HTH Vince
