Trans issue at drag strip.

Trans issue at drag strip.
I was at the drag strip last night. first pass went well. Cut a 1.7 60' time and 12.50. I let the car sit for 35-45 minutes. Second pass didnt go so well. Car left a little weak. It was stalled up as normal (2800-3000) but only cut a 1.9 60' shifted fine out of first but when it went to shift from 2nd to 3rd it was like the trans went into neutral. RPM where bouncing off the rev limiter. When I left off i tried hitting the pedal and it just revd up. At the time I had it in 3rd. I moved the shifter to drive and still same thing. When I slowed down i moved the shifter through the gears and finally found 2nd. So i had reverse, 1st and 2nd. I continued to work the shifter and 3rd still did not work. I cut the car off and let it sit for 25 mins and got in it to drive home. After that the trans worked like normal. All gears were present and no problems. Right before I got to my neighborhood I gave it one last final hit and it shifter from 1st to 2nd to 3rd with not problems. Im running a stock trans with a 4000K stall. At the time I am still using the factory cooler. (I have a hayden cooler in the garage but have no installed it yet.) Does this sound like an overheating issue or an electrical/mechanical issue?

I have had that exact same problem..i took it to the local transmission shop and the guy told me it sounded like an electrical problem because my speedo and rpm clusters were acting wierd. Some people have told me its an overheating problem so i bought a B&M cooler thats been sitting in my trunk for about a year and a half. I havent had time to install it but will this summer if i get a new transmission. The car runs fine its only those 100 degree days where it starts acting up and after i do a few runs it also hits the rev limiter going from 2nd to 3rd. My car is at 152k miles also so a rebuild or replacement is probly what i need to do anyway. I would say try installing that cooler if you have a stall...i dont think they recommend that you run a stall without a cooler anyway i bet thats what your problem is and your transmissions life is going bye bye faster than if you had a cooler installed.

I am figuring it is a trans temp issue. I spoke to my trans guy and he says that because the problem went away after 30 mins he doubts anything is damaged as in the clutchs or sunshell or anything. Im installing a trans cooler right now actually. Ever since that day I have not had an issue again so we will see next time out to the track.
