Default 700R4 Torque Converter HELP.

I need to figure out what kind of Torque Converter I need. I keep getting many different answers from different people and I need to know what will really work.

I have a built 1982 700R4 tranny. I need to know what kind of TC I will need to work with my 400+ hp 2000 LS1. I originally thought just any LS1 TC would work, but people have told me that it wont. I have heard that an LT1 TC is what I will need to work. I tried a TH350 TC from a normal SBC for comparing perpouses and I see how the flexplate is different and the stall input shaft doesnt fit into the center of the flexplate to link up with the crank. Also, I dont see why just any LS1 TC wont work?? I thought the 700R4 and the 4L60E were basically the same thing. Any help here is greatly appriciated.

I have a pretty much brand new 700R4 converter 2800-3200 stall I'll let go really cheap. I used it in my Tubbed S10 for around a 100 miles, but decided to go Th400.

Lightbulb

What input shaft do you have on the 1982 tranny??? Not intending to offend you here, but "built" and 1982 700R4 are not words you usually hear in the same sentence - with that year of tranny, you need to replace every part in the transmission with improved new design parts for true high perf use (hopefully that *is* what you mean by built). The original input shaft is a 27-spline job which hopefully has been replaced with a modern 30-spline job. The LS1 uses a DIFFERENT 30-spline input shaft - the very end of it is bigger and won't go in a non-ls1 converter. I doubt you have this shaft unless you specifically asked somebody to install it in the tranny (which could be done, BTW).

I have no knowledge off the top of my head what the LT1 converter pilot hub diameter is, maybe somebody can supply that. I can measure an LS1 hub, if you want though....

When you order the converter let the manufacturer know it is mating to an LS1. They will set it up the right way. Thats what I did with my Yank for my 200-4r.
