Clicking in trans now won't engage
Just installed rebuilt 4l60e, and while on the jack stands it shifted fine. When I put the car on the ground and put it in reverse it started clicking internally. I backed it out of the shop, and then it lost everything. The clicking varies with rpm. After about 10 seconds it was still making the same noise at the same decibel level but now won't engage into forward or reverse. Any ideas of what might have come apart.

After thinking long and hard about it I am questioning myself about getting the converter all of the way on. I also believe that is the problem. I didn't run it long, maybe only 30 seconds or so, but I afraid the pump and shaft are probablly trashed, if not the whole transmission. I am afraid to take it back apart, because I'm sure it is going to be expensive. Thanks for the input, and I guess thats what I get for rushing trying to get it back together.

I don't have the experience to know whether the pump housing ever gets damaged by this "error", but if not, the replacement parts are only $40:

Of course you do have to remove the trans and pull the pump out.
Next time, ensure there is some clearance between the torque converter mounting pads and the flexplate. There should be between 1/16" and 3/16" clearance. You might want to check it before really tightening the trans to engine bolts.

mrvedit, thanks for the link. Hopefully that's all I need. I knew better when it was a tight fit between the converter and the flex plate. I have swapped the converter three times before because of constantly changing my setup, so I just got it a hurry and f$&ked it up. I just had the tranny rebuilt,so hopefully it didn't pump a bunch of trash through the fresh build. Thank you to everyone else for the responses. Next time I will guarantee I feel the three clicks when seating the converter on the input shaft/front pump. I hope others read this and learn from my mistakes.
