When you move the lever, you are not shifting it, you are letting the PCM know that it may shift into the higher gear when it determines so according to the shift tables in the PCM.

The lever is there to hold the trans in 1st or 2nd, or to select automatic 1-2-3 range or automatic 1-2-3-4 range...

don't think of it as manual shift control.

There are so many different opinions and viewpoints on this topic, however, I have never seen any actual proof that manually shifting the car will do any real damage. If you want to manually shift, why not just get a manual valve body? I just let the computer do it's job.
