Is 2001 and oddball year for 4L60 trans?
My friend just bought a 01 ext. cab 2WD truck with a 4.8L. He was told that there is a pin in the trans that has come loose and not to drive it cause if the pin lets go there is a good chance it will destroy the trans to the point of not being able to repair. So he phoned some scrapyards to see if he could get one and he has been told they are different for some reason. Would you guys know the difference by chance? I would think as long as it is 2WD and say 1999 and up they would all be the same.

As far as I know, you are correct that any 1999 through 2006 trans should work fine. I assume yours has the mounting hole at the top 12 O'clock position which in turn indicates it has a 300mm input shaft and matching converter.
I don't know much about trucks and whether different years/models had different tailshafts, but you should be able to swap your existing one onto the replacement trans if neede. It does have to be a 2WD trans so that it has the correct output shaft.
I'm no trans expert, so watch for any updates/corrections to what I said.

I'm not certain what "pin" you're speaking of, but for the most part, everything internally is safely interchangeable from 96 and up minus the input shaft.. Earlier models (93-95) have different pump, spacer plate, and electronic qualities, and later units with ISS will also have similar differences. You shouldn't have any problem finding a good donor trans at a local boneyard. Good luck with your quest!
