Cool Transmission 101...

So I gotta start from scratch. Stock 4L60E tranny is only going to 2nd and not shifting to 3rd or 4th. I want to do it right the 1st time. New? (refurb) or Rebuilt? If a rebuild is recommended then what kit should I get? I want a bada$$ tranny, so pls give advice.

Bad *** tranny and 4l60e don't belong in the same sentence.

I personally would look into swapping to a 4l80e.

Look through the offerings from the sponsors. IMHO, skip each sponsor's lowest price model and start with their next priced model which will have many upgrades to strengthen it. You're looking at anywhere from $1800 to $6000; $2400 is probably the sweet spot.

This isn't entirely true. I know very well a handful of cars going 9.0's using a 4L60e. Depending on the application they will live up to the task with the right parts and technique. I can't argue that the 4L80e or even TH400 will willingly handle more, but the swap isn't often cheap or easy. As mrvedit said, you're going to invest a couple grand to get a decent unit, but you're probly looking at about 5k to get a good 4l80e swap done.

A 4l80 is leaps and bounds over a 4l60.. No way I would trust a 4l60 At those levels.

I'm going to worry about my new 370 setup with a 150-200 hit, let alone the 300.I have a built 4l60 FWIW.

I would rather do it right once than have to worry about doing it again and spending several thousand more AGAIN instead of spending an extra grand in the first place.
If you can't afford to do it right the first time, you can't afford to fix it when it breaks.

I agree, I can't contest your logic there, my point is going 9.0's consistently with a 4L60e in a full weight car is pretty badass..

Absolutely.. Same with a beefed up 10 bolt... But I'd rather have a 9". LOL

if you have the skills or knowledge just buy a 4l60e rebuild book and do it your self. but if you cant just go with one of the sponsors. its so hard to find a really good guy that can rebuild trannys and knows about upgrading them. there's plenty of information on here what to do to beef these guys up. yes a 4l80 swap is better but costs way more and not worth it IMO unless your going for all out racecar

My goals for the car are as follows: a strong beefed up tranny, and a powerful street car. I keep it simple. I plan on maybe adding headers, a tune, intake and maybe a cam. Really don't know even what'll be suited for my style. But as for now @ square 1, the transmission is foremost.

As For a 4l60e swap to a 4l80e I need a brief education on subject.
