Soooo.... I rebuilt my first automatic tranny! Advice for other newbs found here!
OK so I rebuilt my first automatic transmission. Its was the 700R4 in my 91 S10 4X4.
I don't know why its taken me this many years to plunge in and try an auto tranny rebuild but I decided that I have neglected that part of my automotive education too long so I did it.
If you have never tried it your first question would probly be "was it hard?" well no it wasn't it was actually surprisingly EASY.
A little too easy really, I was a little scared upon first start up because it went together so plainly but wouldn't you know it she worked smoother than a baby's bottom.
Some tips I would like to share to other trans novices that might be considering taking a job like this on are:
1. Buy the instructional video (priceless)
2. lip seal installer is a (must have)
3. universal drum spring compressor tool (must have)
4. transtar catalog LOL (nice but not necessary)
5. bad *** snap ring plier set (highly recommended)
6. If you find debris in the pan replace the converter.
7. bushing driver set ((highly recommend) but there are other ways of installing them)
Well that's all I can think of right now.
Here is how my rebuild went:
Tore tranny down.
Found rear sun gear, planetary, and ring gear damaged.
Found metal in my pan.
Bought used good rear planetary set for $60 bought alto clutch rebuild kit with seals etc for $384
Re-installed everything after a thorough cleaning.
Worked like butta
I really wish that I would have attempted this years ago. I always was a little scared of getting inside an automatic trans. After this first one though I am sure that I will be building my own transmissions from now on LOL.

I am about doing this myself in a month or so...
But the damage inside my trans is a little bit serious I think... The last 50 yards of driving, sounded like a bunch of keys shaking, heheh... 2-3-4 gears didnt work...
And I think my output shaft broke.. I can move the shaft from side to side almost an inch.... So I expect the worst :-)
But the core is intact, yaaayyy....
I am about doing this myself in a month or so...
