picked up a built 1996 4l80e got a couple questions.
Ok I picked up a rebuilt 1996 4l80e from a local trans guy. It has a transgo hd2 kit, red clutches, upgraded to an hd drum like the later 4l80e so it has more clutches. sonnax bushings and coaline coated steels. My question is the transmission will be going in to my foxbody mustang build. Is there a difference in the plugs or electronics from this 4l80e to a later model? I have a stand alone harness in the car. I will be using the 2002 fbody computer I have for the car also. I have done a few swaps and already did one foxbody with a 4l60e that was easy plug and play but the 4l60e and 4l80e are different.

From what i've read the main difference is the bellhousing bolt pattern and the newer ones do have an eletronic part around the shift linkage. I'm not sure what that is for though... I think most of the F-Body guys don't even plug anything into this because the 60 doesn't have it either. From what i can tell of this electronic part is that it is removable and then it just has a basic linkage arm to attach to your shifter. I added pics to this post below to show what i'm talking about. The rest of the trans is the same in terms of function. The Pre-'97 have a different pan/filter and don't have the very top(12'o'clock)bolt hole but it's not needed and the cooler lines in and out are in the same position as the 60's lines(or real close). The newer('97+) have a line up from and then back by the tail housing and have the top bolt hole. Also the plug for the 80 is on the drivers side(60 is on the passengers) and they have 2 speed sensors on the 80. You only use the rear one(i believe)
4L60 shift linkage:
4L80 shifter without the electronics(early ones)
4L80 with the electronics(i think are removable and not necessary)

Since yours is a '96(exact same as mine) you won't have that electronic part and you'll have the lines up front. Otherwise, function wise, they are the same as the 60. You just need a adapter harness from the 60 plug to the 80 that also gives enough length to get to the plug on the drivers side. You will have to make sure you have clearance for that plug on the drivers side(not sure the makeup of the underside of the fox body cars in terms of space. ~Cole~
