How much power can a stock 4L60 E handle?
I am the owner of a 1998 Z28 A4 which unfortunately remains stock. I would like to possibly add a baseline supercharger kit (vortech or powerdyne) and i am wondering if the stock tranny can handle that large of a power increase?
My Z28 is an everyday driver, will the tranny withstand the in-town abuse with a supercharger? Does anyone know how much horsepower/torque a stock 4L60-E can handle? mine has 46000 miles.

considering it already has 46k miles on it, and not telling how much abuse it has already been put through it is hard to say. In over 2 years mine has held with 6 converter changes, hundreds of track passes, but with the added power of the H/C now it could start to brake at any time. I would have to say maybe 450 rwhp, but try doing some searches and see what you come up with. If you do a converter, especially just make sure you have a good sized trans cooler and perhaps a trans temp gauge to monitor your temps. Getting your trans temps too high is one of the biggest killers it seems for these trans.

Thanks! I have tried some searches, but so far... nothing. I will keep lookin, and let ya know if i find any concrete specs. It still shifts pretty firm, so hopefully it will hold up. I doubt ill ever push more than 350 hp to the rear anyway. Thanks again!

well, if you're not certain and you have the money for a supercharger I would put some money aside for insurance. There are many other factors and you can never tell. Some people's trans last 30k miles with much abuse and others go out at 10k miles.

I completely agree. Thanks for the advice. Do you know of any good replacement transmissions or rebuild kits? If you do know of some, do you know about how much they cost?
