Time for fluid change in 4l60e, this fluid alright?
Hey guys, ive owned my 2000 camaro ss for a little over a year now. I've drained every fluid in the car except the trans. I have no clue when the last time the trans has been drained. The owner told me 4 years ago but he could be lying. I've got 80k on it and have never drained a trans before so i've got just a couple questions.
The fluid isnt brown or burned smelling, so i'm guessing I wont have my trans acting up after the fluid change? heard some scary stories.
Is this castrol transmax dex stuff any good?

Should i go ahead and buy a new felpro gasket? Didn't know if the older one is reusable.
How many quarts is the 4l60e gonna need if im dropping the pan/changing the filter? 5?
Thanks guys.

Yep Ive used Castrol a bunch of times. Buy 6 quarts to be safe. Gasket is a must, I prefer rubber with a super light layer of Ultra Black RTV on each side. For the filter I prefer a Wix.

Do not put anything on the Duraprene pan gasket. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and flat. Torque to 65 - 75 inch pounds. Look at the Filter closely and make sure that it is a Sealed Power filter. On it, it should have "microfelt", "filtran", "SP" or "SPX" on it somewhere. These are known as "zero leak" filters and are the best on the market. The only way to tell what is in the box is to look at it closely. You might find it on the first try, or it might take a couple tries here to locate one. The next best filter is the Allomatic and it will have a big "A" on it.

While not familiar with "Duraprene", they look very similar to the stiff fiber ones I like. I use a small dab of RTV in each corner to keep it in place and attached to the trans case. I drop the pan several times a year to experiment with changes and the fiber gaskets have never leaked a drop even after being reused many times. It probably helps that I have a cast aluminum deep pan. I tighten to about 10 ft/lbs.
Some people have luck with the rubber gaskets, but I have not.

In my eyes there are two gaskets. Cork and rubber. Cork I had fail once due to my first time and overtightening, so I try to use rubber each time now and never have any leaks.
