Default Junkyard tranny - what to inspect?

I just picked up a 4L60e from a wrecked Camaro (79k miles); the junkyard pulled it and dropped the pan before delivering it. The filter's gone, so I can't check that, there's minimal sludge gathered on the magnet.

Should I pull the valve body? What do I want to look for as far as signs of wear? I'm just putting this one in while I beef up the original (pretty sure the sun shell is ground up in that one).

Any hints would be appreciated.

No I wouldn’t pull the valve body. Even if you did you wouldn’t see much. About all you can do without tearing it apart is to pull the pan and check for clutch sediment and metal particles in the bottom of the pan. You can look at the color and smell the fluid to see if it is burnt. Check the input shaft for excessive end play. You can also check the hub of the torque converter for galling and check the pump bushing for galling. One last thing you could check would be the 2/4 servo travel.

First make sure it is a '98+ with a 300mm input shaft which will also have a bolt hole in the 12 O'Clock position on the bell housing.
Removing the valve body is a big job and I doubt the JY will allow that.

Hopefully others will have suggestions on what to look for or test.

"One last thing you could check would be the 2/4 servo travel."

Could you elaborate? How would i do that?

Confirmed - bolt hole at 12:00.

The input shaft needs to look like the pic in post #2:

To estimate servo end play, push down hard on the servo cover and estimate how much it moves. Spec is 1/16" to 1/8". Much more indicates the band is worn. You may have to tap the cover first with a hammer to unstick it. Then it should move in with about 50lbs of force.
