What kind of power can a stock 4L80E hold?
What kind of power can a stock 4L80E reliably hold? I have a stock 4L80E from a 2003 chevy cargo van... has 39k miles.
I'm wondering how much I can safely get away with before I wind up having to rebuild it. My car is heavy (about 4k lbs) but not really heavy compared to a truck. I will also be traction limited as the largest tire I can get on the back (street only) will be on a 9.5" wide rim. Rear end's a 2.88 Dana 44.

A stock 4L80-E will run reliably with 500HP, but not with stock programming. It needs to be firmed up a bit in all gears, especially on TCC engage and on OD engage. The 4L80-E shifts entirely with real clutch packs - there are no band-engage events doing shifting like the 1-2 and the 3-4 in a 4L60-E. Clutch packs respond well to increases in line pressure, they respond linearly. Bands cannot do that - too much pressure increase and they start self-energizing making shifts jolting. The 80 doesn't have that problem. If you add performance clutches and a shift kit to it 800HP isn't even too much to ask of one.
