Best thing to do is go to the Fuddle Racing converter or TCI web sites. There is a lot of information regarding converter selection on either site.

You can pick up a TC from the sponsors list for anywhere from 500 to 900 bucks.
I would just install it yourself. Pretty simple work. I have heard anywhere from 250-500 or so to have it installed.
1/4 miles.. well, anywere from .4-.6 usually. Also depends if you can hook or not .. so, with that said, get some better tires after the install. Also, look into a tranny cooler (24K B&M cooler seems to be the norm). For a piece of mind thing, I would install a Tranny Temp. Guage as well. Just to monitor the temps.
Hopes this helps a little.

Now I'll chime in. Make sure you get a cooler, no need to fry your trans. The higher the STR (Stall Torque Ratio) the harder it will be on your tires. Get some Drag radials and a stall of at least 3000. Also look at Yank if your pocket allows it and get a tranny tune to adjust shift points and to delete torque management. Good Luck.
