I have a 98 trans am with auto trans. Was wondering how to tell what trans i have. Am thinking about getting granatelli Trans Tuner. Is this a good Idea? (2:73 rear).

If it has the original trans it is a 4l60e.

You should have the 4L60E. I'd save your money for the tuner and buy HPTuner instead. It's a much more powerful programmer and you can use it on more than just one vehicle. Your purchase gets you the ability to program all 98 T/As plus you get one other vehicle of your choice to go with it. Check them out.

Start off slow with minor changes. It has a scanner on it and can show you if the changes you made are affecting your air/fuel ratios. You can even upgrade to the enhanced version and get a wide band O2 interface to maximize the performance. You'll also be able to make changes in the future as you change items on your engine or transmission.

HPTuners has a website where you can ask for help plus there is a forum here for help and feedback.
