Default Hangs onto revs...

Lately my A4 (no stall, no shift kit) has been shifting oddly.(113000 miles) Sometimes it hangs onto a gear till 6000-6500rpms. 4th gear stays locked up on the highway (when I let off at say 90mph it stays at 3000 rpm). If i tap the gas on the highway at speed it makes a thud sound and seems to slip for a split second then picks up. The revs never drop it just seems to slip then catch. The fluid is at the correct level and appears to be reddish in color with out a burnt smell. I bought the car with 57000 miles on it and I have not changed the fluid. I do not know if the dealer changed it before I purchased the car. Any ideas as to what the issue may be before I pay a transmission repair company to fix it. Or pay a repair shop to even look at it?

Make sure it is not an engine problem, such as plugged cat or fuel filter. Those can cause wierd trans shift problems at higher RPM's.
