Default Tranny cooler mounted pics with temp gauge sending unit too.

I have been meaning to post this up for a while but hadn't gotten around to it. I mounted my cooler dope style then used the "hot" line from the tranny to the cooler to mount my temp gauge sending unit. Not the prettiest way but it works for now. My temps usually read 150 or so cruising and 180 in stop-and-go traffic. In the hottest months here in Arkansas, cruising was about 180 and traffic was 210.

excellent! that is THE way to do it and get accurate temps!!

although i'm curious on you location of the sending unit, i have mine right from the exiting lines of the trans, right next to the tranny. why did you put the sending unit in the front of the car?

Good point do you think the fluid cools a little before it gets to the sender?

I didn't have the capability to mount it in the hard lines and this seemed like the easiest location to me. It took all of 30 minutes to install and wire the gauge up. I did it in my driveway without a jack or anything like that. And I doubt the fluid cools that much in that short distance. Have you ever seen what kind of force the fluid is pumped with? It pumps fast. When I was verifying that I had the feed line, I disconnected the hose and turned the car on for 5 seconds. In that time I half filled a 2-gallon bucket. I was pretty impressed.

Cool I am gonna mount mine like this soon. My sender is in the diag port and that is not too accurate.

Coming out of the tranny which is the send line, top or bottom?

I don't remember....that's why I disconnected one line and started the car. I was lucky and nailed the right line the first time.

Bottom line is the pressure line. I have always mounted it in the return line. There alot of opinions and ways to do this so I will not argue this point.

I wanted to know my hottest possible temps. I figured this way would meet that need. Mounting in the other line would show me my cooled fluid temp and that means nothing to me. Or is there a need to know that?

mounting the cooler that way not much air flow through, mine is in front of the radiator no need for a gauge

I think you can use that same sending unit setup on a water temp guage, just put it where the coolant throttle body bypass would be. I wonder if someone has done a write up on that?

it still gets decent flow where they have it. However, saying you don't need a gauge is a little off. If you don't know your temp...how can you know if you need it or not?

Agreed....I don't care where the cooler is, it never hurts to know what temps you're running. Especially at the track when hotlapping. It's insurance and that is priceless to me. And as for the placement, it's a tried and true location and gets adequate airflow. It could get better flow in front of the radiator, but at what cost? Potential hotter engine temps? I thought about dropping the aft edge of the cooler so that it was angled down a little more in the airstream, but my temps stay cool enough.

Ah ha, ask and you shall receive.....kind of . I did that exactly for mounting my water temp gauge. It is the exact same sending unit and you basically do the throttle body bypass when you do it that way. Another member told me about it and it worked well. I don't have pics of that though. My stock gauge always reads 220 degress. My actual gauge reads anywhere from 180 when cruising to 195ish when sitting or in traffic. It was a very simple install.

I really don't remember....I'll try to look tomorrow and see if I can find out. I just went to Lowes and found one that looked like it would work. I'm pretty sure it had small fittings on the "T" part. 1/4" or 5/16" I believe. I took the sending until with me and matched it to a fitting that it would fit in. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow and make a write-up in the External Engine section. I'll PM you when I do this.
