Default 98 PCM controlling 4L80e

Hey,
I have a 1998 Z28 with an OEM PCM. I am going to be installing a 4L80e and was wondering if the 98 PCM will be able to control it as well as showing the correct information on the tach, speedo, etc. The car will be tuned by Ed Wright here in Tulsa, OK so I imagine if it is possible he can do it. If not, I could always buy a 99 core PCM for him to work with. I do plan on running the TCI standalone controller, but my goal is to get the car running first. Let me know what you all know

Im not sure if it works or not. Ive seen people say it will and then Ive seen people say it want. I know Keith from HPTuners said they couldnt be done. That was then though. And it may be able to now. Once you get a defiant answer Ill add the info to the sticky.

I called FastChip (Ed Wright's shop) who will be doing the tune and they said that the 98 PCMs can be used with the 4L80e. Z'mnypit, I will let you know if this is true once I take it to them. I would hate for you to add it to your Sticky and have it not be true. Thanks

I emailed Keith at HPTuners and see what he says. Can Ed actually change the OS?

Heres the response I got from Keith

"I don't think it can as I don't think there are any trucks that use the 98
to run a 4l80E"

I guess I'll just have to wait and see. The guy I talked to was pretty positive that they would be able to do it. I tried explaining the differences but he just kind of cut me off and was like, yeah, we can do that.

Sounds good just let me know. Actual tunning for the 4l80e and changing the OS is two different things. I was under the impression only HPtuners and EFIlive had the capability to do so. Once you flash the PCm with the new operating system then you can tune for the 4l80e. But with out the new OS the PCM will not control the 4l80e.

Ok man, did my reasearch and came to the conclusion that 98's are pretty much screwed. LOL Sorry! Heres what I added to the sticky:

~ 98 PCM's will not control the 4l80e. There are a couple alternatives for 98's. You could run a manual valve body meaning you shift gears yourself. Or you can control the 4l80e either with a TCI stand alone controller or the BS3. The BS3 has a module where you can contol any GM trans just like you would with HPtuners, EFIlive, or LS1edit. You could also swap out the PCM for a 99+ PCM then have the OS changed.
