Default TH400 swap help

Ok, I understand the computer issues with my swap, and I also understand that there is an adapter (spacer) required to adapt the LS engine to an older style torque converter and transmission. The adapter goes on at the axis of the crank.

Here's my questions:

1. Does this adpater move the flexplate out, and if so, how does the starter engage? If not, does the spacer move the torque converter out, so there would be more spacers required where the torque converter is attached to the flywheel? I am just having trouble picturing how all this goes together...

2. I have read that 5.3L and 6.0L flywheels have the correct bolt holes without any modification for the torque converter. Is this true, and if so, are these interchangable on all LS engines (LS1, LS2, etc.)? I've never liked the idea of "ovaling out holes" which I have read is required if using an LS1 flexplate.

Thanks guys,

The spacer goes between the flex plate and the torque converter. It allows for short style pilot converters to be used.

If it goes between, then there would be spacers between the torque converter and the flexplate where the bolts go, right? When you say short-style, that is the same as the older style, right?

Thanks for the link. That's actually where my questions originated from. It never says anything about shims or spacers being required where the torque converter bolts to the flywheel. I think it'd have to have them if it is spaced out from the flywheel with the spacer. The spacer is at the axis of the crank.

Also, it states that the 6.0L flywheel, the spacer goes on between the flywheel and the crank, so how does the starter engage? Can any of these flywheels be interchanged?

You should not need any spacers between the flex plate to converter pads. And yes I was referring to the earlier converters with the short pilot.
