Default stall/trans, how do they change what gear ratio is needed?

I know the slip can have an affect on your gearing. I had 4.11s with a stock 4l60e, ss4000, 28" tire and 685rwhp. I was running out of gear shifting at 6900rpm. The gear calculater everyone uses hear http://www.f-body.org/gears/ said I should be good up to 140mph. I was up to 6700rpm right after the 1/8th at like 105mph so I let off because I knew I wouldn't make it. I can't shift into 4th before the 1/4. First change I made are gears, went to 3.73s because that is the lowest(number) I can go with my spool. The gear calc says 154mph but I'm not sure how off that is due to stall/trany slip. I don't know if 3.73s are going to be enough to get me through the 1/4 so I'm thinking about my options. How will changing my transmission help? I plan to go with a th400 but am not sure what kind of stall I will need to make the combo work. Any ideas or info on this? TIA

Those calculators don't calculate the converter. I believe those are only close when using a manual transmission. I would probably try a 3.55 gear. The downfall to that, is that the converter will get quite a bit looser. Your problem might be in the converter itself.

Why can you not shift into 4th gear before the 1/4?

We have cars hitting 4th in the 1/8 mile running 4.56's spraying like devils!

I wanted 3.42s but I like my spool so my only choice was the 3.73s otherwise I have to do the whole rear. They don't make anything less than 3.73s for my 4 series so higher gears are out.

You realize this is an a4 car right? Not to mention a stock 4l60e. Shifting to 4th at wot = BOOM!

Yep, got the part about it being a 4 speed overdrive.

Missed the part about you pushing a stock tranny like that though!!

Yeah, when it blows I'm going th400 but that's why I want to figure out what kind of th400/stall combo I need to go well with what I have now. It should trap around 130. If I can't make it through the 1/4 now with the 4l60e I want to have a good idea on what I'm going to need.
