Default Help...Car will not go in gear

I have an A4...... and since I had the car for bout 4 yrs now i have had to reach under my ash tray on center console and push on wat seems to be a connector to actually get the button on the shifter handle to go in and then it would go in gear. I think it is a switch or connector of some sort just dont know the name. If you guys know the name please let me know

If you have a way to take a picture and post it would help. I think what you are talking about is like a shifter lock. This a safety to keep the car in park. Kinda like if you had small children in the car unattended and one was to move the shifter the car would not get away. You get the picture. Two things need to happen in order for you be able to move the shifter. The keys need to be in the run position and the brake peddle needs to be applied in order to move the shifter. Not sure if the actual name is a shifter lock actuator/lock out switch but that is what I would call it. Maybe some one else will have the exact name for you. Vince
