No room for innovation?
How about this: a OHC 3v Top Fuel engine. This things bad to the bone!

And the McGee quad cam that they also mention in the above article. I wish the NHRA would loosen and allow stuff like this to run...

Big money interests have always played the biggest part in superior, privately spec'd engines from beingallowed by the sanctioning bodies. When one side realizes it can't keep up with the competition, it lobbies to have the competition's tech handicapped...or disallowed. Happens all the time in just about all major motorsports.
IMO, innovation should drive the competition...not tons of inane restrictions on the engineering and design. This is why NASCAR is no longer true "stock" car racing.

On The Tree
The racing class is TOP FUEL what part of TOP do they not understand , other than safety rules that should be it ! It should be about how fast and quick one can make a vehicle run the quarter mile period. No rules on tire size or engine no bullshit rules to save money that end up costing more money.
Just run what you brung and the first one over the finish line wins !
