Default too much oil?

is there such a thing? i know this is kind of a goofy question, but i must not have been paying close enough attention as i was adding oil at my last oil change. i just checked it and it appears that i have aprox. 1/4 - 1/2 qt too much. do i have to worry about any negative effects? i can only imagine the mess i'll create if i crawl under the car to drain just "a little" oil. i have an '04 if that makes a difference at all and i drive a crap ton of miles for work and i'm hitting the road again tomorrow.

Too much oil can be thrown up on the cylinder walls at high RPMs. With only a half qt too much oil, I would not worry about it. If you want to lower it, just replace your oil filter. That will suck up almost a 1/2 qt. If your have a pre '07, then you have options on the size of filter you can use.

you can go with a longer filter giving you a bit more filter.....not a huge benefit but you have the option.

you could always use one of those vacuum pumps and stick it down the dipstick and pull out a half quart. I have one for my jet ski so im not sure if you would have one.

it shouldnt hurt anything though.

The main concern with too much oil is it can get whipped into a foam by the crankshaft and foamy oil lubricates poorly. Maintaining the proper oil lever is very critical otherwise the internal parts of the motor can get damaged. It's actually worse than having the oil level too low.

Just wipe your dip stick about 100times, only way I could think of doing it without making a mess and doing another oil change.
