Cheap rear differential replacements
#21
This thread is roughly 2 years old; I doubt the "cage" came to fruition. I would suggest looking at a 4th gen differential or perhaps retrofitting a Ford 8.8 rear into your car. There's a ton of information around here explaining that process.

Agreed. I would jus get the latest replacement which is the GEN IV. After 500 mile break in, change the fluid to RedLine rear gear lube and you're set.
You should be able to source the new diff from any GM dealer or reseller. The cost is $1600 US.
You won't need a brace with the GEN IV. Just do not drag race it with slicks.

There is no difference in strength between any models. Only difference is in the generation, with each generation being slightly stronger. 4th gen is strongest but I don't know that it was used in anything from the factory. You can find 3rd gens with 3:73 or even 3:91 gears for as little as $100.
Oh and FWIW: I still have the same SRX rear diff from when I started this thread 3 years ago. Only started making noise when I finally installed the 95a cradle bushings. About to install my spare unit (also from SRX w/ 3:91 gears) and DSS 1000hp axles.

I don't have pics Randy. It was a pretty easy swap. The bushings are PITA to change (I installed the Revshift bushing). I left my KARS III kit off and it rides like a new car.
I bought the new diff from a local junkyard for $250 and upgraded the gear ratio to a 3:91. I think the 3:91 is the perfect gear for my car with the cam.

I'm surprised that you can throw a different carrier into a housing with no setup at all and not have it be noisy and/or wear out the ring and pinion. Did you check the gear mesh pattern and backlash, or did you just slap it together and it worked?

The pinion gear stays in but you do have to remove the ring gear to bolt it to the new carrier...so you do need to check backlash just like any other differential gear change.
Oh and I paid $115 plus shipping for my SRX 3.91 diff (w/ 21k claimed) miles on ebay.

3.55 . . . . 39-11
3.73 . . . . 41-11
3.89 . . . . 35-9
4.10 . . . . 41-10
4.33 . . . . 39-9
4.56 . . . . 41-9
4.88 . . . . 39-8
A different overall ratio doesn't necessarily mean the pinion is different. A 3.91 could be (probably is?) 43 on the ring gear and 11 on the pinion.

Hello this has bin posted a while back I HOPE you can answer I'd appreciate it! I might sound a little weird asking this but what do u mean by cutting 1" of the input shaft to the drive shaft I cant picture it I'm sorry and also swap the gears in the srx differential and puthe them inside my limited slip carrier. Thank you dealer charging me 2k to fix it :0

The pinion gear needs to be cut, so you can install the yoke/flange and bolt the driveshaft to the differential. The V uses a different yoke/flange than the SRX. The SRX pinion has a 1" stub that's about 1/2" in diameter that needs to be removed for use on a V. I used a cut off saw and a sprayer of water to keep the pinion cool during cutting ...
