Thumbs down Is it possible to get rid of drone????

Hey Guys,

I love the way my car sounds, but the drone is unreal at cruise. It is especially bad 1500-2200 rpm, and wouldn't you know, that's cruising speed in 5th and 6th!!!

Anyway, car is heads/cam/maggie/kooks headers/high flow cats/x-pipe/magnaflow exhaust.

Sounds unreal. I love it. Tone and volume are fine. Although, a little bit of popping between shifts and while slowing would be nice, too.

Need to get rid of the drone!

I'm thinking about replacing the x-pipe with a pair of Dynomax Bullets to start.

Any of you successfully eliminate the dreaded drone?

TIA!

Dynamat the entire interior...or put a stock cat back on the car again.

outside of that, most after market exhuast combos will have some drone.

mine is at 1400-1600 rpm...Kooks/cats/magnaflow. the way i fixed it...listen to my music at retarded volume levels.

Yeah, but I have a 3 year old daughter and a grumpy wife... No loud music with that company in the car.

Some drone is expected and even tolerable. But this is too much.

Dynomat (actually, Grace Ice Shield) is on the list as soon as we move and/or I finish building the Buick. I have all the Creative Steel mounts on the rear and they transmit a lot of gear noise into the cabin. Two birds with one stone on the Dynomat.

I was having crazy drone issues on my old Sierra and tried a few different mufflers. I finally went against everyone's recommendations and went true dual with no X or H. Drone is GONE. And I've experienced the opposite effect when adding an H or X to my dual exhaust LT1 cars, meaning increased drone with them.

I know, I know... Apples and oranges.

But, I think if I get rid of that damn X pipe, it may cure my problem. And I'll get the snappop on decel that I miss so much.

I don't want a Corsa, because I don't like the high pitched wail they produce. I like the deep, bassy growl of the magnaflow.

The Magnaflow drone peaks at 1800 RPM, and it's mostly caused by the mufflers exciting the resonant frequency of the spare tire well. Treat the bottom of the trunk and the back seat of the car with a damper layer, then drop a layer of MLV on top of that to quiet things down even more (to be clear, the 1800 RPM resonance can be significantly attenuated with just the damper layer). Just don't buy Dynamat. You can do better than that.

Specifically, I recommend 50 square feet of Damplifier Pro or equivalent on the entire bottom of the trunk and back seat (double layer on the back seat where the driveshaft passes beneath, or until you can't feel vibration there any more), and 27 square feet of Luxury Liner Pro over that. Use whatever you've got left inside the trunk lid between the inner liner and the license plate.

Exactly why the corsa i just installed on mine (although i love the no drone) will most likely be coming off. Sounds good at idle and cruising and even though i like loud at WOT (which is definitely is), it has that higher pitched uncontrolled scream instead of that low end grunt im used to. Nice system... just a different sound.

Sounds like you might as well put up trades. Magnaflow for Corsas, vice versa?

Corsa with no drone would solve OPs problem, and I'm sure people would want his Magnaflow setup.

Just run with open headers for a few days until the trades are done. LOL

Any worthwhile suggestions? Aside from Dynomat, which is part of the plan anyways?

I'm surprised it drones that bad with cats. My old car was kooks, catless and magnaflow and it had some drone but nothing like you're experiencing.

Dynamating the interior is not as important as Dynamating the trunk. Trust me. The trunk is where the majority of the sound is resonating from. I work for an exhaust manufacturer and have discovered this from years of personal experience and customer feedback.

Put stock exhaust back on... install cut outs.
I have headers with no cats, and I get popping on decel occasionally. Even an occasional backfire.

This gives you the option to open it up to hear it in its loud ridiculous glory, or to close it up when you got family in the car.

Man... I mention I'm prob gonna ditch the corsa and everyone wants it. Lol haven't even posted it for sale and I've received a few pm's already about it.

I'd prob sell it outright if I do let it go. Prob won't get cutouts until a little later
