8.8 guys come in
I see so many members stating that it was the best mod they ever did and its worth the price, etc. I am at the point with the car now where I am either going to mod it, or sell it.
So my question is, why do I need see video or time slips with you guys on drag radials/slicks!? It seems like a huge waste of funds to spend that much money on a mod and not ever use it. Might as well just bought a gen4 diff for 1/5 the price. That's like buying a turbo kit and never going over 3500 rpm!
So sell me on the 8.8.

Seems like you're sold on not getting the 8.8. I love my 8.8 because I can trust it. Thats all. I don't have drag slicks yet but its in the plans. Time slips will not help your decision because people can't drive and manuals are not good at the track. I gave the car the rear end it deserved from the factory.
If your plans are to spend a bunch of money and make a bunch of power then putting in an 8.8 should not be a difficult decision. If you're not, then the gen 4 diff does make the best sense.

I'll eventually go 8.8 for peace of mind. I have no intentions of going drag racing but if I want to cut up a little, I don't want to be worried about the diff.
It will almost be a maintenance item at some point as my driveshaft will eventually start to go and the diff gets a few more miles on it.
The v1 can be all the fast car I ever want so I don't see getting into anything else because I have rail buggies and trucks to buy....it'll be a worthy investment for me.

How about doing all the clutch drops you want any where you want? I did 20 passes at the track no issues. Well if you drive your car like a luxury car and not a sports car even a gen1 diff will work for you.

I will agree though. I'm praying for my rear diff every time I get on the drag strip with my V1. It's sketchy AF. I'd love the peace of mind having an 8.8, and actually being able to push the car to it's limits.

Like said above, piece of mind, and you can drive it they way it was meant to be driven. Last year I drove to Indianapolis for the lsx shootout. 4 people in the car, 8 hour drive. I got there and decided to run the car down the track a few times. Not a chance in hell I would consider that with the stock rear end. If its your daily driver and you don't beat on it, don't buy it.

The 8.8 was the single best thing I ever did to my V. I no longer had to worry about breaking a rear end at auotx. Just knowing that you're not going to poop a gear set at any moment is a wonderful thing.

I got very lucky my V already had a gen4 diff when I bought it. It seems very strong and is quite as a mouse(except for some clunk still) with zero whine. I still haven't installed the revshift 95a diff bushing sitting on my dresser... I'm sure that will help with the clunk.
I do fear doing clutch drops but at the same I don't baby the car at all.
For sure when this diff eventually fails it'll be a toss up between the CS 8.8 and 9" gforce.

8.8 because you can more easily get parts should something fail. 9 inch parts are more costly and a bit harder to find

I'm working on a 8.8 build from a explore with 410 gears. ANyone know where I can get the sleeves needed to weld on my 4th gen tubes on. Please don't say machine shop I already asked one and they said no.

Don't count on the Gen4 diff to be that much stronger that you can beat on it consistently. Mine lasted less time than the original Gen1.
I'd do the 8.8 in a heartbeat as soon as I can get the funds.

Come on Guys, get those slips out, post a Vid....the man wants proof.
My best time at the strip was a 13.1 with a 1.9 60' time. Not bad for a bone stock V1. Did 25 passes, 25 !!!, then drove it home.
This is a cool thread, might have you go down the "8.8 customer email list" to get some of the guys that have an 8.8 but don't post too often to chine in.

And again, those 60ft times mean nothing. If I saw a 1.6 v1 60 time the first thing passing through my mind is wow, that boy can drive. If you had no hop issues I bet the stock diff would hold just fine. The cv's not so much but..... have you found someone that broke an 8.8 in a V? No? Have you seen a broken factory diff? Yeah? How much are you willing to tolerate before you invest?
