Default ls newb needin some help

picking up a 5.3 out of an 08 H3 for my old truck. its complete minus the computer. i want to put a carb on it. i would also like to put a nice little cam in it. nothing too radical, but something with a little lope. i have a quick fuel 750 i could use, but was thinking that it might be too big. will i still need the computer for anything if i am running a carbed motor as opposed to the efi? this is my first ls, and would like to do it right. i was thinking a cam and intake would work well on the little motor. any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks for any info.

Carb is fine, no the efi is completely eliminated including the ECM that operates the fuel system. Threre is a edelbrock carb cam that seems it would fit the brill if a off shelf grind is what you are looking for, will look up the specs and part number when I get home for you.

If your on a budget, ive also heard of people picking up a used LS6 cam and getting good results. It probably wont have a lope, but it will give you a good, broad power curve and still get good millege. Eric L

Oh yes, no lope but stock sounding packing nearly 400 hp, carb, intake and headers with ls6 cam, you would be a fool to think it wouldn't make well over 350 hp at the flywheel, 370-390 I'm sure.

Your engine is a LH8 aluminum block ,stock 300 hp,320 tq 9.9:1 compression, displacement 325,5.3 that does have flattop pistons,It has a 58x ignition system,Your engine is based on a LS2 rather than LS1,Because of the 58 x ignition if you purchase a MSD for you ignition you will need to get the 6012,My 07 5.3 has a comp thumpr cam, small lift, with a really loppey idle,Im useing a Holley Ultra 750 double pumper, just recent i installed a autometer wideband a/f and its not to far off right out of the box.Remember LS engines have great stock flowing heads, most the same as a high priced aftermarket 1st gen heads..What you need is the 6012,comes with wireing harness, choose an intake, and carb..O and you wont be calling this a little 5.3 engine when its alive Lol!I get this all the time(did you put a three fiffy in that thing)Its fun to say(nope its just a 325 that will spank your old school 350)Lol!What is the casting number on the heads of your engine?,Im trying to figure out why your LH8 is 300hp stock compared to my LH6 320hp,My heads are 243's,same as 799

YOU DIDNT SAY,BUT.next your going to have to think of what transmision your going to use,Old school transmisions will bolt up to LS block, but you will need a spacer, something to do with the torque converter spaceing,The GM part is what 2500 hd trucks come with if they have the 4L80.Im thinking maybe you need the flywheel from the same also.Just thought id throw this out there just incase you didnt realize this.

I needed to find a dished wheel for the current swap, cannot remember where the spare is. Anyway, the 6.0 2500 spacer and flex plate are perfect for the older Ls swaps, but the newer 5.3 have a longer crank and are still .200 out or so from perfect.

No thats actually how they come if you have that part number. So basically, it cheaper to get that setup from dealer then to buy it all seperate
