took my carbed ls2 to the track
i got it together last weekend and took it to the truck nationals/ls1truck shootout.
1st pass:
running lean on only 31* of timing. it hit the tires too hard off the line and I tried to hang into it. ended up letting out past the 60' and got back in.
12.12 @ 119 mph with a 2.09 60'.
i tightened the extension on the shocks 3 clicks from full loose which worked awesome. i hooked perfect the rest of the day BUT i fought problems the rest of the day. 2nd pass it sputtered and popped all the way down the track.
1.80 60' and a 11.9 @ 116
got it to the pits and could feel a misfire when revving the engine. i found that the #2 plug wire wasnt getting spark to the plug. thinking i found the cause of the sputter and misfire i ran it again.
11.76 @ 116 with a 1.75 60'
still popping and sputtering all the way down the track. around a 13.5 AFR.
all 8 cylinders were firing, but i noticed that the fuel pressure was down to 4 psi. i had the aeromotive pump tapped into the OEM wiring. i grabbed some 8 ga wire and ran it directly to the battery through a relay directly to the pump. still only had 4psi. i removed the filter elements and got 7psi back. thinking that i fixed the problem i went for another pass.
1.63 60' 11.63 @ 115.
still popping and sputtering all the way down the track. still lean (but it has been running a hair lean for a week without any pops or sputters). back down to 4psi after the run
i jetted the 2ndary up to 88 pill and gave it 1 last hit. still lean. still sputtering/popping/shitting
1.59 60' with a 11.73@112.
i left the transmission in D instead of OD and it did something weird on the shift. the 2/3 shift was way early and it felt like the converter locked (or it seemed like it because the motor was so far down on power after the first run).
i'm dissapointed that i couldnt get a clean pass after figuring out how to get it to hook. i think it has a lot left in the 60' becuase the first pass it JUMPED, then spun. the rest of the day it left popping and coughing. i plan to change the plugs and wires to see if it cures the popping. i'm sending the pump back to aeromotive to make sure it has a clean bill of health.
nothing broke and i didnt wreck, but i'm still annoyed that i drove 6hrs round trip and couldnt get 1 clean pass. from the first pass the MPH dropped almost 5mph in the 1/8 and 7mph on the 1/4 but i was able to drop .5 from the 60'. it should run pretty good once i get the engine back in line, richen it up and add some timing.
I'll get a vid or 2 up asap. the suspension is working pretty damn good. the front left is hopping up in the air every pass and it's holding the nose up even with the engine down on power.

afr showed about 13.5. lean, but not enough to make it pop like that. the pass before ran the same afr and the engine was made a clean pass. in neutral it revs perfectly fine to 7k. under load it gets pissed.
i have tr55 plugs in it at 11.4ish compression. i'm going to replace them with tr6 and new plug wires. the fuel pump is a aeromotive street/strip. i already have an RGA# to send it back to them for a check up. i also plan to pull the covers and check for anything that may look out of place.

hopefully new plugs and wires will do the trick. the fuel pressure is not right and needs to be fixed no matter what. i may pull the bowls and blocks to check for any trash too. i found some of the fuel cell foam in both filters. i wonder if some made it to the carb after i removed the 40 micron post pump filter.

Heard more than one having issues with the cell foam.....get rid of it.
I have the Aeromotive SS pump, works great....yours may have a problem ?
Spinning off the line will skew the MPH to the high side.
At least you got it out....I wish first track days were all good....but you didn't oil down the track like I did 1st time out
It can only get better....I hope

zane, i dont think the coughing/popping from the motor is carb related. your carb was running 14.0:1 AFR on my engine at WOT. i dont plan to touch your settings. i need to get that thing back to you soon. i was hoping to use it for some trouble shooting if i cant get it lined out with plugs/wires and a good pump.
yes it has a retrun line -8 from the cell to the fuel log and -6 returned to the cell.

Pump gas and fuel cell foam DONT mix. I pulled the foam out of mine. IMHO, the ethanol content in the pump gas eats the foam. Pull it out and clean the whole fuel system. Best of luck, Eric L

My cell is a 16 gallon and I haven't had any problems so far. Ive made countless street passes at less than half tank and haven't had pressure loss issues. Unfortunatly you don't have much choice. Eric L
