Default 5.3 LM 7 Carb Build

My son wants to make his little 73 C 10 a little sportier . So last winter we lowered the truck found some 20" tires and wheels and added a 373 posi to the 12 bolt rear . This is what we rolled out of the garage this spring .

This winter we are back in the garage taking out the I6 and 700 R4 and replacing it with a 2000 5.3 long block that we got from a friend that was super clean .After much debate and looking at how much he had saved up we thought it would be best to carbed the motor . So here is what we are doing so far .

Quick Fuel HR-680-VS
Edelbrock Intake #71187 Performer RPM LS1 Duel Plane Manifold
MSD Ignition Controller#6010
As Cast PRC Stage 2.5 5.3L CNC Ported Heads Milled .017
GM 5.3L Multi-Layer Steel Head Gasket #28-12589226
MR45676 1 ¾” ceramic coated long tube headers 3" collectors
GM Gen III Cylinder Head Bolt Kit #28-12498545
GM ls2 Timing Chain # 12586482
Comp Cam ***** Thumpr 283THR7 High Performance Street/Strip
Melling 10296 Oil Pump
Moroso GM LS Valley Plate
GM LH8 Pan Kit #19212593

All backed up to a TCI Powerglide Transmissions #TCI-713182
Advance Adapters LS Series Flexplate Adapter Kits #ADD-712500A
TCI StreetFighter Torque Converters #TCI-741000

Very cool truck! My first truck was a 73 Stepside Chevy. I still miss that truck.

Just curious, why a powerglide over the 700r4? Seems like a big mismatch to me, and IMO, that truck isn't going to be any fun to drive on the street with a powerglide. The first gear ratio is too tall (not to mention the heavy weight of the truck) so it won't have any "get up and go" from a stop, so even with the new motor it will still feel sluggish and under powered. Also, since you'll be losing overdrive it will be equally unpleasant running down the highway since the rpm will be quite high (3k+) just to go 65 mph, which will make it a gas guzzler. Neither of which make for a good street cruiser. I'm not trying to put down your build, it looks like a great father/son project, but IMO you're making a huge mistake with that powerglide.

I agree with UOP here. A glide in a heavy car on the street with a mild converter is no fun at all. I have been in cars like that. When they switched to a 3 speed, it was like they added nitrous.

I have a couple more thoughts for you:

When it comes to carburetor and torque converter matches, I don't recommend vacuum actuated secondary carburetors with high stall torque converters. If you are going to run a 3500 stall, which would be a good choice with your camshaft, I recommend a mechanical secondary carburetor. The unit that I would choose is the Quick Fuel SS Street Carburetor 750 CFM MS.

What is it, exactly, you want from this truck? Looking closer at your parts list there are some things that don't make a lot of sense to me but we'll get to that later.

We want a Street Strip truck but mostly a Street cruiser .

I did find new rebuilt 700R4 that was built up to handle 450 hp . So I jump on it as it was a deal because some one put the deposit down and never came back to pay the shop .
