Default Quick tuning question

I know some of you guys know a lot about tuning so I have question for ya. I need to do some data logging on my '96 OBDII camaro, so I need an ALDL cable. Among doing a bunch of research, it seems that an OBDII cable won't work on 96+ models, they say I'll need an allinone scan tool, I got all this info on lt1pcmtuning.com which led me to the "allinone" tool for post 95 cars. It said the OBDII cable for 94-95's wont work with 96+ cars because "Although the connector style is the same, 96 and later cars use the OBD2 communications protocol, and are not backward compatible to earlier year cars". Could you please give me some insight on this. I really need to see what's going on with this car. I'm just trying to find out if there is just an ALDL cable that will work with my car without all that extra crap. Thanks in advance.
THis is the allinone site: http://www.aldlcables.com/sc/details.asp?item=obd2usb
