Cam gear install question

Cam gear install question
I bought a motor that was partially dissasembled, the oil pump and timing chain and gears were off.
I was installing the cam gear on the weekend and after installing the retainer plate and the gear I noticed that the cam can move front to back in the motor a little. Seems like this is not correct. Can anyone confirm?

OK thanks. How much play should there be there front to back? I want to make sure there is not excessive play there.
I guess as it spins it will find it's own home position and will not move. As the timing chain spins it will keep the cam from moving front to back.

I've read somewhere that if there is no spring pressure on the lifters that the cam can actually be removed w/o losing the lifters in the engine. Which would make sense if it can move front to back...
