Default What rear end gear ratio?

I know a lot of variables go into this, so I am just trying to get an idea of what rear end gears people are using. I have a 72 Nova. Working on getting an LQ9 in there, and currently riding on 225/60 15 tires. I currently have 2.73 gears. I was thinking maybe 3.73 or 4.11. This will be a daily driver, weekend cruiser, and occaisonal young punk stomper. What gears do you have? and What gears are suited for me??

I have a LQ9 with a 4l65E.
Just found this:
4L65E gear ratios: 1st 3.059, 2nd 1.625, 3rd 1.000, 4th .0696
Maximum Shift Speeds: 1-2 5600 rpm (M32), 2-3 5600 rpm (M32), 3-4 5600 rpm (M32)
Maximum Engine Torque: 380 lb-ft (M32)
Maximum Gearbox Torque: 670 lb-ft (M32)

Unless you're wanting to make power past 6800 rpm, forget any gear over 3.73:1. That times the 3.059:1 first gives you an 11.4:1 low, and I've run that with 235/60R15s and found it to be on the fine line of nearly too deep. I had another Camaro I did try a 4.10:1 with that 3.059:1 first, and 275/40R17s, it most assuredly was way too deep of a first gear, despite a 230/230-at-50 cam.

I agree. I've asked people from LS1tech.com who had LSx/4L60/3:42 and they commented that 1st gear is borderline useless. Remember as ISOLDE implied.....mathmatically you can figure out what it would be like using a th350 or th400. a 4L60e w/3.42 rear is closed to a th350/400 with 4.11s ( yes I know th350 vs th400 have diff. 1st & 2nd gear ratios) The rear gear is a matter of preference. If you have a well sorted out suspension with matching meats... 3.42 might be ideal. Then with the OD its all good.

IMO

I'm running a 3.08 ratio in my 65 cutlass. I am currently have 225/60/16 tires. Lower gears aren't necessarily going to get you there any faster unless you have the tires etc to hook up. Certainly lower gears may feel faster but reality they aren't going to be. Some of the stock A4 camaros came with 2.73 gears and some had 3.23. I have been told that the right stall converter will get you there faster than the gears will. I have a stock 2002 ls1,stock converter, and 10 bolt posi and I can smoke both the tires at will if I launch at any thing over idle. Putting more gear in would just make that worst. I turn 1900 rpm @ 70 mph on the highway get about 23 mpg average.

Thanks for the input everyone. Sounds like 3.55's might make my Nova happy.

I'm running 2.56 gears with a Carbed 5.3L to a 700R4 Trans with lockup in my 67 Firebird. On the freeway it's crusing at about 1600RPM at 70MPH I'm looking for a good 12-bolt rear end with like 3.73's or similar out of an old nova or camaro up here in Alaska...

I've decide to stick with the 2.73's. See how that runs, and make changes if needed.
