Default Magnaflow cats - how close is too close?

Started building the exhaust for my E36 LS1 swap yesterday and these cats are big! 2.5" inlet/outlet but the the body diameter is 5". They only fit one way and the driver side is close to the transmission. Should I be worried about this? Options? The other Magnaflow "pre-OBDII" cats are 4", seems like a lot to spend to get an extra 1/2" clearance on each side.

This is only my second exhaust so go easy on my welds! And I'm using plain old C25 with stainless wire. (I've got plenty more excuses.)
