Default 86 swb project

hello my name is derick, im new here and to the ls series engines.

my first plan was to build my 86 chevy into a bad a$$ bbc street strip truck, but my brother inlaw and cousin have talked me into going to ls power witch I don't really know anything about besides they make a lot of power easy and reliable and there way easier to drive on the street.

so here is the plan for the build. I have bought a 01 rolled Tahoe with the 5.3 in it. and I want to swap everything possible over to the swb, I want the old school truck with all the modern stuff. I want to take of coarse the motor and harness, fuel tank, fuel line, seats, and all the ac and heater stuff.

I really want the modern ac and heater blower motor and control switches, has anyone ever switched all this stuff over before? dose anyone have any advice on this and this is my first time messing with ls motors what is some more advice on things I need to get/do for the swap. I know I need motor mounts, and I have heard of adapter rings and flex plates to mount the ls to my th400.

thanks for any and all info and help guys.

If you are going to run a 4.56 rear I would try to find a 4l80e, with a th400 and 4.56 you will be running crazy high rpm if you ever hit the highway. If you have the donor vehicle you can use the 4l60 in it also, they just don't handle power very well. What power level are you wanting? And NA, boost, nitrous?

Ya I was thinking about that yesterday, so I called and changed them to 410. The Tahoe is 4wd .and as far as power, I'm putting a cam and headstuds super Victor intake in before the motor gose. And probably a 175 shot. Then once I get everything in and the truck and put some mikes on her and everything is good and dialed in I'm going to start putting twin 60 on it.

Will that is my future plan. Oh and I'm running 30" tall tires to go with the gears

read mine for some ideas so far . https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...post-45-a.html

and fyi on moser c-clip eliminator kit . watch out guy on other site just got bit hard . the street eliminator kit wont fit the large bearing housings in our truck 10 bolts . he found this out after cutting his housing . he now has weld on 9" ends coming / axle bar and pucks to center them / all new brakes for rear .

also here is your rpm's at 65mph .

th400/4.56/30" tire = 3507 rpm @ 65mph
4l60-e/4.56/30" tire = 2324 rpm @ 65mph
4l80-e/4.56/30" tire = 2490 rpm @ 65 mph

th400/4.10/30" tire = 3154 rpm @ 65 mph
4l60-e/4.10/30" tire = 2089 rpm @ 65 mph
4l80-e/4.10/30" tire = 2239 rpm @ 65 mph

hope these #'s get you in the right direction .

Why would you put a spool in a street truck?

I want a full spool cuz it is a 100% lock up all the time and this truck will be making a lot of powerdown the road. So I want it to be set up for it. And like I was saying this truck is going to be more or a drag truck that I can run to the store buy a 6 pack a can of dip and blow all the little mustang and camaro away. Lol

Are you going carb? You mentioned going turbo later on, its easier to boost with fuel injection IMO, but it's your truck, either way you will have a blast.

What kind of power level are you expecting? People are getting good power out of boosting with stock truck intakes, I don't see 600 rwhp being any problem with the stock truck intake. If you go super victor you have to buy that, plus a carb style TB or an elbow and run a stock type TB. If you are building an all out engine the super victor will flow better, but I just don't see the need.

Nice build! Check out 67-72chevytrucks.com. There's a lot of similar builds on there.

Ya I plan on going all out later one but for now I want to get everything I can out of the 5.3. And work on my set up as a whole. Then once I have everything pretty much dialed in with the 5.3 like all the wiring plumbing fuel lines trans exhaust. Once all the kinks are worked out of everything ill build a big cube 6.0 then ill pretty much be able to swap all of my stuff over to it. My end goal when the truck is 100% done I want to be at 1000hp. But for now I'm going to start kinda small with a good intake cam and 175 shot.

Well guys I haven't forgot about this build. I had to get moved into my new shop trailer tge wrecked tahoe and my sw from Kansas were I bought them 3 1/2 hours back to Oklahoma. Bit I have actually got the tahoe tore down and motor will be on the stand and tore down tomorrow after I fix my fence from a wind storm blowing it over. But I got tge t-case out trans out (both are for sale) and motor out, I still got to finish pulling the wiring harness out and clean up my mess from the tranny oil.

Here are a couple of pics. Oh and the motor comes out a whole lot easier when you cute the middle of the core support out lol

Cant wait to see what the shape of inside the motor and get it cleaned up. I think it has 843 heads or something like that on it I know the 8xx. I have heard a lot about different heads but I never have heard about these heads before. Anyone know anything about these? Worth keeping or not? I cant wait to order a bunch of parts from tick in the next couple of weeks.
