What about a live rear axle?

Couple buddies of mine (and myself) are interested in doing a 5.3 LM4 swap into this '72 240z. We're looking towards parts from Johns Cars Inc but are wanting a live axle instead of the IRS. Almost every conversion I've seen has either used the R200 from the newer Z's or the Ford 8.8 irs. But after hours of search, I can't find any hard detail on a live swap. Anybody know much about these?

Most don't do them, because the R200s handle tons of power.

I have the early q45 r200 in mine that has the larger shafts. Most people don't go live axle because they bought a Z because its a sports car and would like to keep sports car handling. There are some straight line guys who have converted to a straight axle, check hybridz.

Yeah, unfortunately Hybridz.org will have info. Spend some time reading through existing threads and ask specific questions. Those people are pretty constipated about answering general questions like the one you just asked.

They have a pretty good frequently asked questions section that should get you started.
