240sx LS>VQ build thread.

So I got an update from TDSP and this what the email stated:
hey,
we have the trans disassembled and assessed. It definitely has not been rebuilt. It needs a handful of gears, and other hard parts.
1st gear, 2nd, 5th & Reverse. & assemblies for 1/2, 3/4 & 5/6 plus a new 5/6 shift fork. Also the 5/6 mainshaft journals are worn where the 5/6 driven gear is. This is somewhat common, and we actually get the mainshaft remachined to tighter specs, so this issue won't ever occur again. It's just a poor design from the factory.
We have all the necessary parts, except for Reverse gear. This gear is on backorder, and is due to arrive any day now, just not sure when. I'm sending an email to the distributor to hopefully get an ETA. We can go ahead and build the trans about 90% of the way, in the meantime. Reverse gear is one of the last parts to go in.
Of course I'll wait to hear back from you before proceeding. It's going to cost right at 1300 for all the additional parts (listed above). I can do the Stg2 build for 950 although it says 1050 on the website. That makes the total come out to 2250 plus shipping. The problem with these gears is the engagement teeth. They are dull and worn, from the syncro rings getting worn. When the trans is ran with worn rings for a long time, it starts to damage all the surrounding parts (gears/slider assemblies). These "hard parts" are never supposed to be worn out, as they only get worn as residual damage from the rings not being replaced. I can send pics so you see what I'm talking about. New gear vs your old ones. It helps to understand.
Send me your cell # and I can text the pics to you. Also, of course, the build pics once we start on that
Thanks
Jason
Lesson learnt. Never buy a 'rebuilt/refreshed' t56 unless you have complete pics and documentations. I spent 1500 on this trans which t56 that needs rebuild usually cost arnd 800 bucks. So far I have had more bad luck than good luck on this project. I will post pics of what Jason took.

yeah that sucks, probably could have bought a brand new tr6060 magnum for what you're going to spend on the t56, I'm about to send just my gears 1-4 to get faceplated on my t56, and build it myself, I got lucky and have someone who used to work at chevy and built t56's at my shop to lend a hand

Damn that blows, you have some bad luck , I just pick up a stock t56, monster stage 3 clutch and pro 5.0 shifter off hear for $1250, met the guy at thundervally drag strip, pulled it out. I just finsh the swap tonight and the tranmission shifts perfect, I had to buy a flywheel ( the one I got from him was a ls2 vette), master slave and clutch line. How long until your done?

Tdsp is sending my trans right now. Waiting for the machine shop to finish my engine since they gonna change pistons and rings as well per their recommendation. So I'm hoping beginning of June if I dont see any issues. That's a damn good deal on the t56 especially with monster clutch included.

So I'm still waiting my engine to be done at my local machine shop. I brought it by almost 3 months ago and it's still not done yet. I stopped by Monday, and the guy said he's gonna try to get it done by Thursday . Thursday came and didn't get a phone call. So today I called , and he said that I got the wrong size main bearings. Why hasn't I been told earlier in the week. So now I have to reorder the right main bearings and have it shipped to the shop and everything it's at a stall just like when he said I need a new pin rod bushings.
Is this normal for a machine shops or it's just poor practice?
By the time all said and done, it will be freaking fall!

seems pretty poor, I gave my machine shop a block and rotating assy, they ordered the bearings, balanced rotating assy, line hone each cylinder, gapped rings, degree the cam, and it was done in 2 weeks. and not sure what you're calling pin rod bushings, is that wrist pins? I guess you can call that a bushing, you're using factory rotating assy?

I'm Baton Rouge, LA so I had used Tim's Engines in Denham, but I think I'd use wall to wall if I did it again, and yeah there is a bushing on the rod, I was confused at first, kept saying what a retarded machine shop theres no bushing in the piston,
