Moped Engine Swap....seriously
I'm getting a moped pretty soon and i think its kinda gay that it's only going to be able to go 30 mph. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with swapping an engine on a moped...I was thinking about some little 100-150cc engine...Would that fit? And is that even possible to do?

It may be easier than that. Back in '93 when I was already old but still too young to know any better I purchased a moded as they were drag racing mopeds pretty heavy for big money around here. There was a race kit for it that consisted of a new revised cylinder with much different porting similar to that of a 2 stroke dirt bike, a much larger than stock piston that bumped displacement up to 60cc or so, a new carburetor and an honest to goodness expansion chamber. It was supposed to bump the stock horsepower up from just under 2 to around 8. With proper gearing the upgraded ones were supposed to run 60+ mph with no problem. Alas, I do not have hands on experience with the kitted model as the dealership that was doing this for me burned to the ground with this moded along with 3 other motorcycles I owned at the time. I would certainly look into some type of race kit like this before trying to swap a motor onto/into it that may or may not make any more power than a race kit for it. If I remember right, the whole kit was only about 500-600 dollars and though that's pretty steep I'm sure you'll invest more money than that into a swap. Good luck with whatever route you take and have fun with it.

BTW, I'll gladly provide you with the dealership that did this for me if you're interested in trying something like that. He's rebuilt the store now and is one of the best guys to deal with I've ever known.

I've seen some perty impressive old school v-8 "Boss Hog" "mopeds" but i cant figure out what they use for a transmission. I've herd that some only have one gear. any way if you could stuff a ls1 in that thing......well...........I'm afraid my hat would be off to you.

There was/is no kit for a 4 stroke model that I know of. The moped I had was a 2 stroke and the cylinder just changed the porting so that the engine was supposed to have a powerband just like a 2 stroke dirt bike racing engine. I'd seriously check into a 2 stroke moped if this is what you want to do. They may not even be available for all types of mopeds. I know they were available for the one I had. If you'd like the name and number of the dealership, let me know. I'd rather not put it out on a public forum like this for fear of people calling him just because his number is out there. hey just get a used scooter and a good chain saw. take the two stroke out of the chain saw and fab it up. you would have no tranny unless you could mount one up some how. they have a centrifical clutch but with the right gearing that thing could be stupid fast.

Some of you guys may remember the Honda Monkey. Well I swapped from the stock 50cc 3-speed semimatic to a 107cc 3-valve 4-speed manual... I have a too big gear out back right now, so I can launch in 4th and still take a stock Monkey (plenty over here to race)... Had to trim the front fender to get the head to fit. A friend who had Monkeys as a kid tried my right after I did the engine swap... he went into second, let the clutch out and got on it... almost flipped the thing over.
Edit: Oh, Ive outrun the following: Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4, Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 and Polaris Sportsman 600 4x4 (I know because Ive had them all). My rear hub has already shattered once, I reinforced it and now the rim is about to break where the Grade-8 bolts hold it to the hub... Also broke my speedo. I have another pic to show how the carb comes out on the other side (used an adjustment plate), it sits right infront of your left foot (perpendicular to the bike).
If the motor is based on the Honda 50cc engines (same as used in the Monkey/Z50 and Trailbikes) then swaps are a piece of cake with the exception of carb/intake, exhaust (I gutted my muffler but still need to run a bigger header), and wiring (pretty much shooting in the dark - and right now Im running a 12v electrical system on a 6v chassis, so no accessories for now).
