I second simple green and a rag or soft bristle brush.....go easy on the aluminum. You'll need plenty of elbow grease.

I had considered power power washing it as well but I was worried water would get into unwanted places.

Mine wasn't too bad so after a quick rinse I hit it up with some scotch bright and some engine paint because mine is an iron block. It looks great now.

I used oven cleaner. Works great on aluminum. Then used Fantastic and covered with high temp clear enamel from Napa. Oven clean won't hurt rubber or plastic.

try gunk or dish soap solution to remove the dirt and grease then let it dry after it has dried shoot on some meguiers hot rims wheel cleaner the acid will eat away at the aluminum,(it wont melt away your whole engine) but it will make it look nice and bright. you probley dont want to get much on the plastic parts. get the engine as clean as possible before you apply the rim cleaner.

Carb cleaner work pretty well if it just dusty and dries really fast as opposed to engine degrease seems to leave a coat of oily stuff on the motor. I use it on the block and trans.

Took it completely apart, hot tanked it, added cool new stuff and put it back together.
