Default LS1 starter wiring PROBLEMS

Hey guys,
Long night last night. I was running my power wiring and I ran into a problem I got the power run to the starter then alternator then the fuse block go to test it out and click click click nothing.

Ok so I trouble shoot and take off the starter to work on that by itself. I get the starter of the car and take off the wires. Now this is the way I wired it.

3 posts on the back of the starter selinoid. 2 big posts and one little post. The big post on the left I had the battery power and the wire going out to the alternator. One the right post I connected a ground wire that I connected to the chassis for a ground. Then the small post I had switched to the ignition.

All that happens is I hear the selinoid click but no spin from the starter motor. What am i doing wrong??

I even took the starter off the car and hooked the left big post directly to the battery then the right big post to a ground then touched a wire directly from the battery to the small post to eliminate everything out of the equation and the selinoid clicks hard but doesnt spin the starter. It just gets the wires very hot like it is shorting.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG???????

HELP!!!!!!

I am hoping I dont need a new starter since this one came off a car with 12000 miles on it but if I do I do.

Please help Cause this is one of the last thing before the beast will fire up!!

Also on another question from the starter to the alternator do you just run the power off the same post? Same thing from the alternator to the fuse block of the one post??

Thanks
Mike

There are NO ground wires on the back of the solenoid!!!

Get that off of there. The other post on the back of the solenoid is the wire going into the starter motor itself. When the contact closes in the solenoid, the battery power is connected to the motor so that it energizes. If you have attached a ground wire back there, you may be doing the same thing as hooking the battery positive to ground!

Just to clarify the left post on the solenoid goes to the battery and the small top post goes to the switched 12volts correct and the right post just goes into the starter itself and thats it??

the small post with the 8mm nut is your key switch.. should be like a 12 guage wire going to your ignition relay circuit.

Then the big post farthest from the engine block (i believe) is the one that goes to the battery.

I'm going off of memory, not 100% sure, but pretty sure.

If you key'd the starter to crank and you had the ground on the other post, you could have damaged the starter relay.. I shivver at the thought of connecting direct + to -... I've had it happen before accidently to my car.. SPARKS everywhere.. looked like someone was welding.. I watched from a distance and just felt the pain.

I've been out of the state for a week so I've got a LOT of catching up to do!

Thanks. Glad the harness worked out good for you.

I assume you have the starter issue resolved?
