Default L76 conversion - fan not coming on

Started my L76 conversion into a cobra replica on the weekend wasnt that exciting to hear it go pretty much first pop. Im running a single 16" fan. Was swithching off the high speed pin out of the ecu (e38) - but was getting nothing. Did some ecxperiments tonight (car not running, just ign on) and couldnt get either pin to ground out, by dipping the temp sensor in boiling water or even by shorting out the connector (0 ohm) to simulate a very high temp). What am I doing wrong?

What year is the engine? If it did not have an electric fan in the vehicle it came in originally then the controls for a e-fan may not be enabled in the PCM.

2006 engine - used in VZ commodore in Oz, and also used in the G8. They do have electric fans an the tuner reckons it should be right - but apparantly there may be some tricks to getting the fans to work with the E38.
