Yep i got some bump in the trunk! 2 - 12"s in a home made box.
No, a box designed for a hatchback will not work on a convertible without modifying it. The trunks are different.
Its easy to build one yourself. All you need is thick MDF board (dont use plywood), some liquid nails, a ton of screws, a saw, carpet, and maybe some poly-fil if you want. You can get as complicated as you want or just build something simple. I suggest buying the subs first, and then building a box with those subs in mind. They will specify what size enclosure they work best in. 1 trip to home depot and an afternoon of work can result in a nice setup.
I personally think the bass sounds just as good if not better in a convertible. The only thing you might wanna do is remove the trunk divider plastic piece. Mine rattled like crazy until i took it out. I think from standing outside the car you can hear more bass from a rag top than a hatchback car, but maybe thats just me. My trunk lid rattles a little when its cranked, but then again, who's doesn't?

i had a 15 in a sealed enclosure in my vert (like 1 foot of air). the bass hit really nice and hard with the top up, but with it down, it was muted quite a bit.
so far, i find just throwing an aftermarket head unit in will drive the stock amplifiers and speakers better and you get better/louder sound. as far as bass goes with the top down, i've found no good solutions.
i'm still looking for a decent sound system solution for a vert with the top down.

The tube itself seems pretty stout. It does take up most of the trunk well, but I don't use the trunk anyway. I have never bothered to take it apart to see other dimensions (depths etc). I have an MTX speaker that might go in the tube, just to test it (MTX T4510-04).

johhny B's setup is nice!! looks cool too you think 4 ok 8" subs would be equilivant to 2 nice 12's? or do you think the two 8" setup is nicer and just go lil more expensive on the 2 of them?

I was told the box didn't have the air space four 8" subs would need so I followed the shops advice, had johhnyB build the box for two and went with two very good boston subs. It has been more than adequate for me. Also it gives you a good place to mount the amp.

I got the convertable setup from Subthump.com. Inexpensive and really quite good. I've got a 10" Rockford Fosgate P3SD10 and an Alpine amp and Alpine Head unit. Works great
