Default Do I need gears?

I was planning on going with a rather big cam, (238 248, 605 615). My friend says I will need at least 4.11 gears for that cam to prevent it from bucking and surging. BUT, I do make regular trips back to Tennessee from Tampa about every 6 months so I dont want to running at 3,000rpm all the way there. Would my stock gearing be sufficient for that cam or do you guys reccommend going smaller? If I go smaller, an MS3 perhaps?

It really depends on the tune. I am running a 244/250 in my Z06 with a 383 stroker. I just went back to stock 3.42s from the 3.90s. I really did not notice any increase in bucking, but I did notice all my shift points changed. Now I have some cruising speeds where I need to stay in a gear cruising at 2500 rpms because the next gear will drop the rpms to low and create some bucking.
