Is the 1984 C4 IRS suspension the best Corvette Suspension of all time?!
Im going to be converting my 1970 Chevelles suspension over to a corvette IRS suspension when i can afford it. A few friends recomended the 1984 C4 IRS suspension to me, They said that it is still the best available.
Any comments about this?
Any Tips about my conversion?
Thanks

I think you've come to the wrong place, but I'll give it a shot. No, its not the best corvette suspension of all time, the C5 suspension is IMHO.
I'd still go with the C4 suspension, but I would be worried about putting it under a car with that much more weight.

C4 suspension when used properly was amazing. the Grand Sport cars, the ZR-1 and the Z51 cars as well as most all C4s are capable of doing some fairly insane stuff. But, imo too, the C5 suspension is far ahead of anything else from America, and has the capability now to rival it all. Especially w/ the dominance of the C5R ALMS programs and the Grand Am and Trans Am C5 teams doing well. C5 suspenion is a better suspension, but C4 isnt bad by any means

Welp i asked Taylor they other day about the conversion over to a C4 suspeion. Taylor converted his 1968 Camaro over to a C5 suspenion. Taylor said that he had to lose his back seat, trunk, and firewall. He told me that it would an extreem amount of work, time and money.
So I have decided against the conversion. I dont know what i can swap out of another car for a petter suspenion that will practicly bolt up. I think the best that i can do is just keep advancing my suspenion with products that come out onto the market.
Thanks for your responses guys, any other suggests please feel free to toss em around I could use the extra idea's

Try a Jaguar w/ IRS. Or, go to someone like Kugel Komponents, and see what they've got. I dunno what to tell ya...never done a project like that before

http://www.waynedue.com/ added a C4 IRS to a 1st gen Camaro. The C4 Suspensions work very well. The downfall of the C4 was chssis flex. 84 Z51 cars pulled close too 1G on the skid pad, but they had really stiff springs that were changed in 85.

Hmmm a Jaguar IRS aye? That might work. Anybody know any other cars that had IRS suspenion that i could look at and see about converting?
Perhaps a better suspension for a Chevelle that doesnt require massive modifications to the body and frame.
Thanks everyone.

what do you mean the downfall of the vette IRS was chassis flex? The mounting of the IRS caused the car to flex more, or the IRS physically flexed.......I can see the former more than the latter.
And just out of curiosity, was one set of the C4 vette rears strong than the others?

-------------DONT BLOW UP ON ME ABOUT THIS ONE-------------
you can use the IRS of of a cobra. Now before you make fun of me and so on so on, look at it. It uses coil springs and theyre easier to mount up that the tranverse leaf spring, then it uses th 8.8inch rear end. I have seen complete take offs for about 1500 in brand new shape. Thats colse to the price of a 10 bolt and has the strength of a 10 bolt and has the capabilities of IRS.

Actually, an 8.8 is alot stronger than a 10 bolt. Closer to the strength of a 12 bolt.
8.8" vs 8.875" for the 12 bolt. Not sure how strong the IRS is out of the cobra though. I know alot of the high hp mustang guys switch over to the regular 8.8.

yea but when you build a car w/that much hp you dont really want IRS to rob your power. Thats the only reason, if it wasnt for the loss in power im pretty sure they would just leave it alone. Kinda funny we got a faster car w/a rearend thats weak. Then you have a mustang with a rearend that has the strenght comparable to the 12 bolt and 9 inch
