Default Fuel gauge problem

I have a 99 c5 stock and for some reason when the fuel gets down to about a 1/4 of a tank left the low fuel light comes on and then the gauge drops all the way down to empty and stays there till i shut the car off and turn it back on. What would be causing this?

Several C5 owners have this problem... There are a number of fixes, but I am not sure any one is the "end all" fix... I started using only Chevron/Techron gas and the problem (which was constant) has went away... Some have had the sending unit replaced... others have mentioned the software fix (which I got also and it did not fix the problem)...

Good Luck,

It is a common documented issue. I think CF.com has some good posts and documentation on it.

Yep. Very common/documented problem. GM attributes it to sulphur content in certain fuels. Here's a link to some TSB's:

Same problem here when I first bought my 98 about 5 months ago. Adding a bottle of techron at each fill up does seem to help. My .02!

I replaced the sending unit in my '00 model and the current owner said it happened again. I tend to think that it's a gas issue. And mine would do it with well over a 1/2 tank of fuel left. Freaked me out the first time it happened. So far I've run nothing but Chevron and Exxon in my Z with no fuel issues as of yet.
