DIY drag colum...save #15
Better clarify this first before people get pissed at me for ruining there columns lol.
Saves money if you dont mind fabrication, #10+ weight reduction - and gets you that nice clean, plain jane column racers are running.
DRAG COLUMN DIY - Serious racers only - this mod eliminates blinkers, wiper controls, cruise - your column basically lol.
This is a broad DIY right up but points you in the right direction, & for experienced mechanics/ fabricators (or confident people that try **** like me haha)
Tools for column - socket set, torque bits, wheel puller, snap ring pliers, pry bars...ect.
First step get ahold of a column, and rip it apart. your only gunna use the center rod outta the column.
MY stock column w/ grant wheel - 20#
afterwards just the rod column and wheel - 6#
see pics for 1st step before and after............................
notice in the last pic - interior column & the (Exterior column/to rack)
next steps.
I used www.speedwaymotors.com for the majority of the parts. FYI if you dont have the catalog you should get it!
1" 30 degree swivel firewall mount. (keep in mind you will have to plate off the old column hole since this mount is a different shape)
Steering support bracket, mounts to your firewall bar on cage (keep in mind this is for my setup and might not work for you, so get creative) and you will also need to mount another guide bearing on this support. ^^ one above would probably work fine.

And if you want to use the tilt to adjust better to fit you - you will have to support that part also with another bearing. or you can cut of the u joint and extend the rod to desired length ect.
And this Heim is wut you bolt on to the steering shaft support to hold the shaft in place
3/4" heim for steering shaft. Has .757 ball hole. Slides right over standard 3/4" steering shaft. 3/4" NF right hand threads. Jam nut sold separately.
also you can order one of these steel quick disconnects or a similar one so u can weld onto your column

I just ordered my cage from wolfe race craft (thanks guys) so when that gets here ill actually be able to mock up the parts i have for the column. And if this thread disappears ill start a new thread with actual photos of colum mounting ect

Cool! I've had this as one of my many-have-not-done-squat-on ones for a LONG time! I got a nice used column (cheep-cheep), and am looking at just using the covers and firewall plate from it...combine that with a chromemoly tube and new flex joint. Keep us posted with your spin on it. Take care. Dave
